The branding started by researching the Native American culture and from that I looked at their traditional POW WOW gathering and the use of dance in eagle outfits as the main driver of the brand. Face painting or "War Paint" is a tradition for rituals, dances and going into battle which I thought would be important to apply in the character design.
I also discovered the medicine wheel which is being used by many tribes for health and healing. It is a integral part of the aboriginal culture and wanted to incorporate it into the logo.
"The circle, being primary, influences how we as Aboriginal peoples view the world. In the process of how life evolves, how the natural world grows and works together, how all things are connected, and how all things move toward their destiny. Aboriginal peoples see and respond to the world in a circular fashion and are influenced by the examples of the circles of creation in our environment"
After the research I decided on incorporating an eagle and drums into the logo design. I wanted to create a unique look to the font and wanted to make it look as if was carved with drums and bingo balls. The Medicine Wheel was initially incorporated into the centre of the both letter "O"s but later removed and only used in one of the letter as it was more effective. Below are the initial quick sketches and then the final presentation.
Character design for Pow Wow Bingo is using an Eagle as a mascot and face paint designs from some of the many costumes Native Americans use during their tradition dances. The colours in the face paint used was red and black and it represents the following:
Once the character was finalized, it is broken up and animated in SPINE to be used in various areas of the Social Bingo Game APP.
We had a handful of online users that had already been playing on our desktop version of the bingo and pooled the feedback. We testing people between the ages of 11 and 55 years to see first hand how they interacted with the product and see where their pain points are. From the testing we discovered that the game was friendly for older generations to much younger teen players.
The App store images needs to show excitement and rewards as you progress in the game. We wanted to use trigger words like exciting, winning, collecting, and level up to increase the number of downloads and player base.
